Foundations of Literacy – The Science of Reading

Act 108 of the 2021 Legislative Session

Act 438 of the 2021 Legislative Session

During the 2021 Legislative Session, Louisiana lawmakers passed Act 108, which requires early literacy training for all K-3 teachers of reading, math, science, and/or social studies as well as principals and assistant principals of schools that include the K-3 grade levels. This training, which consists of the science of reading, must be completed no later than the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year, and Richland Parish has chosen A+PEL as our Foundations of Literacy training provider. There are five total modules to complete, and though there are no performance-based assessments required for these modules, there is a final multiple-choice assessment we must pass after completing the fifth and final module.

As a district, we are committed to supporting educators and students through this process, and we will utilize the expertise of our three literacy coaches, who have already been through the science of reading modules, to guide us through this process so that we can all successfully meet the requirements of Act 108. We will also utilize our dedicated district PLC days in March, April, and May of 2021 to help you all complete the first three modules, and our three literacy coaches will
facilitate this process. (4th-8th grade ELA teachers will receive training as well).

Our first training, set for March 11, 2021, will take place at the Richland Art Center. As a group, we will watch the training videos for the first module, and our literacy coaches will help facilitate our new learning.
